We will be updating this list following feedback at the community engagement events taking place throughout October and if you have any questions which are not answered here, please feel free to email info@givingbackdundee.com and we will get back to you and add these to the list which will be updated on our website (www.givingbackdundee.com)

Why is it called Sakura?

Sakura means cherry blossom in Japanese and the cafe/hub is based in Dawson Park which is well known for its many cherry blossoms.

How long before you open?

We have to wait for planning permission from Dundee City Council before we can start on the renovations and these will take several months. However, we hope to be open in time for the cherry blossoms next year.

What is a community cafe/hub?

A space for everyone to feel welcome.   The cafe will be similar to those found in the town centre and the hub will provide free groups and activities as well as providing support and advice to those who need it.  Hot drinks and food will be provided free of charge on those days.

What groups & activities will you offer?

We are still working on this and asking for feedback at our community events.

What will the opening times be?

We don’t know the full opening hours at present, but aim to be open 5 days a week as a cafe and 2 days a week as a hub, depending on staff availability.

Will the building be accessible?

Yes.  We are widening the doorway for wheelchair users and installing new ramps for both the takeaway and cafe.

Will you be eco-friendly?

Yes, wherever possible we plan to use recycled materials and compostable packaging.

What will be on the menu?

We don’t know the full menu as yet and are taking feedback from the community at our engagement events.  We will try to use local suppliers where possible and will be using some produce from the community garden in the cafe and at the start will have a smaller menu which we hope we can extend as we grow.

Will you cater for specific dietary requirements?

Yes!  We will have plenty of options available for those with specific dietary requirements and can adapt other dishes if required.

What about allergies?

We will ensure that allergens are clearly marked on the menu.

Will you be dog-friendly?

Yes!  Well behaved dogs will be welcome in the cafe space and in the outside cafe area.  However, dogs are not allowed in the community garden and there will be a small fence around this area.

Will you accept cash?

Yes!  We will accept both cash and card payments.

What about parking?

There are two car parks connected with the park; one on Caenlochan Road and one on Strathern Road.

What if I arrive by bike?

At present there are no secure bike racks by the cafe. However we will speak with Dundee City Council about the possibility of installing these.

Can I volunteer in the cafe?

Absolutely!  Please contact us at info@givingbackdundee.com .  We will be holding some volunteer days once the works are underway.
